Alternative Medicines Ayurveda cong panel to meet tomorrow Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, July 24 THE Union Health Minister, Mr Shatrughan Sinha, is expected to attend a meeting here on Friday of the organising committee for the four-day World Ayurveda Congress 2002, scheduled to open in Kochi on November 1. Announcing this, an Ayurveda Congress spokesman said that Mr Sinha, along with the Union Minister for Human Resources Development, Mr Murli Manohar Joshi, would be the co-chief patrons of the event. This will be the first international congress that Mr Sinha will be attending after taking charge of the Ministry of Health in the recent reshuffle of the Cabinet. A high-level committee headed by Ms Malati Sinha, Secretary, Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&H), has already set into motion a process for interacting with the various Ministries involved, and co-ordinating with global players and entities for the successful conduct of the congress. Ms Sinha would also be attending the preview meeting. Renowned practitioners from an estimated 30 countries have already confirmed participation in the event. At least 2,500 delegates representing Universities and research institutions from within the country and abroad will also be attending, the spokesman said. Coinciding with the congress, a week-long Ayurveda Expo and Herbal Trade Fair will be arranged from October 30. Ayurveda colleges, Universities, botanical gardens, research and development institutions, manufacturers and marketers of ayurvedic medicines and nutraceuticals, medicinal plant exporters and ayurvedic treatment centres are expected to participate in the fair. Globally, the size of the herbal drugs market has been estimated to be around Rs 50,000 crore. This is expected to touch Rs 2.5 lakh crore by the year 2010. Currently, India's share in the global market is around only five per cent. "This means that there is immense scope for expanding the country's share in the global sweepstakes. The global market for herbal food supplements has been separately estimated to be in the order of $1 billion," the spokesman added.
