NEW DELHI, July 24

THE National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has revised the prices of three drug formulation packs with retrospective effect from July 22.

While the prices have been fixed for the first time in the case of one formulation — a combination of a painkiller and Paracetamol — it has been increased steeply in the case of two others by about 44.5 per cent and 64.85 per cent.

In effect, the treatment of fungal ailments and Parkinson's disease will now cost much more than before.

According to an official release issued on Wednesday, the formulation for which prices have been fixed for the first time is a combination of Ibuprofen (400 mg) and Paracetamol (333 mg), a drug used in the treatment of pain and fever.

The price of a strip/blister pack of 10 tablets has now been fixed at Rs 5.24, excluding excise and local taxes.

In the case of the formulation for fungal treatment, namely Grisovin, manufactured and marketed by GlaxoSmithkline Pharmaceuticals Ltd, the price of a strip of 10 tablets (250 mg) has been increased by 44.50 per cent from Rs 18.18 to Rs 26.27, including excise with local taxes being extra.

Similarly, the price of Madopar (250 mg), produced and marketed by Nicholas Piramal (I) Ltd for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, has been revised upwards by about 64.85 per cent to Rs 92.50 from Rs 56.11 for a strip of 10 tablets, inclusive of excise duty but excluding local taxes.

The NPPA release said the new ceiling price for the Ibuprofen combination and the revised non-ceiling prices for the other two formulations have been fixed in accordance with the provisions of the DPCO, 1995, and as per the established criteria and guidelines.

The new prices are to become effective within 15 days from the date of the Government notification or the receipt of the NPPA order.
