10,700 primary schools okayed

Ajita Shashidhar

THE Ministry of Human Resources Development has sanctioned 10,700 primary and elementary schools and 62,000 Education Guarantee Scheme centres under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, according to a senior official of the Ministry.

The EGS centres will be set up in places that do not have a school within a radius of one kilometre, and the quality of non-formal education will be upgraded to a level matching the formal education system, the official said.

The Government has sanctioned Rs 4,667 crore this year for the execution of these projects, he said and added that the Government was planning to hire more teachers under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan programme.

"We are recasting our District Institutes of Education and Training. We will ensure that they become more flexible and functional, and are in a position to also take in people from the universities and NGOs," he said. The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan is also inviting corporates to support primary and elementary education in rural areas. "Organisations such as the Azim Premji Foundation, Infosys Foundation and ICICI have already done a lot of work in this area in the States of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh," the official said.
