Expo to focus on exports from non-IT sectors

HYDERABAD, Aug. 15

WHILE software and pharma exports from Andhra Pradesh have shown impressive growth rates in the past few years, traditional sectors such as agricultural commodities, fisheries, leather goods, handloom and handicrafts have virtually stagnated.

In the software sector, exports grew from a meagre Rs 135 crore in 1996-97 to Rs 1,917 crore during 2002. In comparison, agriculture and agro-based products grew from Rs 2,646.05 crore to Rs 2,728 crore in the same period, according to figures from the Department of Industries and Commerce.

In an effort to focus attention on the need to boost exports from different product sectors, the Gitam Institute of Foreign Trade, Visakhapatnam and the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry and The Exhibition Society of Hyderabad are jointly organising `IMPEX Fair 2002 and Seminars' from August 29 to September 2 in Hyderabad.

As part of the fair, a buyer-seller meet and focus-group discussions related to issues of artisans and entrepreneurs would be organised, Prof. C.S. Venkat Ratnam, Director of Gitam Institute, told newspersons.

An exhibition with a capacity of 150 stalls for exhibitors had been planned at the Exhibition Grounds in the city, he said.

While the Agricultural and Processed Exports Development Authority (APEDA), ILO, VEEPZ, Girijan Co-operative Corporation have confirmed participation, corporates such as Sahara, Hyundai, Hutch, Toyota have evinced keen interest in participating in the five-day exhibition, Prof. Ratnam said.

Dr V. Raman Rao of the Exhibition Society said, "IT has got more than its share of exposure from Hyderabad in terms of exports. Other products also need further promotion. The exhibition society has created the necessary infrastructure to provide the platform for exporters to showcase their products".

The exhibition will have apparel, leather, handicrafts, agro, industrial plastics, automobiles, consumer electronics, artisans and small industries showcasing their products.

The State Agriculture Minister, Mr V. Sobhanadreeswara Rao, had been invited to inaugurate the seminar, Mr Om Prakash Tibrewala, President of FAPCCI, said.
