Human Resources Odepec seeks to tap overseas job market Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Oct. 4 OVERSEAS Development and Employment Promotion Consultants Ltd (Odepec), a professional consulting agency under the aegis of the State Government, has claimed access to a large pool of overseas employment opportunities for the resident community of teachers, doctors and nurses. Speaking to newspersons on the activities of the agency, Mr C.P.A. Bawa Haji, Chairman, and Mr S. Srinivasan, Managing Director, said that reconnaissance missions taken up in recent times by Odepec have succeeded in tracing out a large number of employment opportunities for qualified residents to destinations such as the UAE, Singapore and Kuwait. This was mainly the outcome of a series of discussions a visiting Odepec task force in New Delhi had with Ambassadors and High Commissioners from the UAE, Germany, Kuwait. According to Mr Bawa Haji, the Odepec delegation was able to make an impression on the diplomats about the efficient and transparent manner in which it conducted its operations. The diplomats were also convinced about Odepec's credentials in being able to mobilise their requirement of qualified personnel to fill vacancies in their respective countries. They responded encouragingly to overtures from Odepec, leading to identification of the large pool of opportunities waiting to be tapped. Odepec is eager to replicate this success with embassies and High Commissions of other countries, Mr Bawa Haji said. Odepec also plans to enter the domestic market to supply the requirement of qualified personnel of resident companies and organisations. Alongside, it has chalked out plans to hold awareness camps in the State to warn the public against ulterior motives of unscrupulous recruiting agencies waiting to trap the uninitiated. New Odepec sub-offices will be opened in Ernakulam and Kozhikode. The current management has identified the lack of an effective marketing strategy as a major chink in the Odepec armour. A massive development plan is in the process of being operationalised under which Odepec will seek to broadbase its activities in order to create thousands of fresh employment opportunities. The Chairman said that the State's undisputed strengths in talent and skill have not been properly marketed in markets abroad. "It is no surprise then that Odepec has managed to send out just 158 aspirants abroad during the past 16 months." A databank on the talent and skills available in the State is sought to be developed to which employers will have access. "Aspiring candidates can contact us for being listed. We will not in any manner interfere in the appointments that are being finalised under the programme,'' the Chairman said.
