Panchayats likely to get financial powers

NEW DELHI, Oct. 4
THE Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has indicated the possibility of an amendment to the Panchayati Raj Act for giving financial powers to the panchayats in the next session of Parliament.
Speaking at the national conference of project directors of District Rural Development Agencies (DRDA) here today, Mr Vajpayee stressed upon the need for giving financial powers to panchayats to enable them to fulfil their responsibilities more effectively. Mr Vajpayee called upon the project directors of the DRDAs to contribute to the process of transformation that the Government is trying to bring about in the rural areas.
