Indigo to hit the roads only in New Year

Our Bureau

PUNE, Oct. 22

CAR buyers waiting to have a dekho or may be purchase the Indica's sedan sibling — Indigo — will now have to wait till the New Year before they can get behind the wheels. The company, which had scheduled the launch of the car this week, has now rescheduled it to end-December, with deliveries beginning in January 2003.

Tata Engineering's Vice-President, Corporate Communications, Mr V. Krishnan, when contacted said the launch was rescheduled to December since the company would have ended up missing the target launch by a couple of days, which in effect would mean it would miss the auspicious dhan teras buying spree. Dhan teras, incidentally, is the time when customers across the country, barring the southern States of Kerala and Tamil Nadu make their purchases.

"If we build up the stocks and it misses the dhan teras buying, we would be left holding on to inventory since post-Diwali all buying stops and it does not make sense to launch in December since customers would then rather wait another month and buy a new model," Mr Krishnan said.

The Indigo that hits the roads will be a 2003 model which could prove to be a boon for customers who can flaunt the latest model car. The car is now scheduled to be launched in December and customers can expect deliveries in the New Year.
