WITH India emerging as a major data conversion centre for Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a four-day international conference on the subject - Map India 2003 - is scheduled to be held in the Capital between January 28 and February 1, 2003.

Several countries, including the US, Europe, Japan and Australia have started operating directly or contracting work to Indian information technology companies and at present, the export size of the domestic GIS industry is about $90 million. Of this, about $60 million is exported to North America, according to a communiqué from the organisers.

The GIS export industry alone employs more than 10,000 people and according to industry estimates, the segment is expected to grow by 15-20 per cent over the next two years.
