Sections of new mental health Act opposed
Our Bureau
KOCHI, Nov. 14
THE Indian Association of Private Psychiatry has opposed the implementation of the new Mental Health Act, 1987 saying that various sections in the Act would affect the smooth functioning of private mental hospitals in the State.
Speaking to newspersons, the office-bearers of the association said that though the intention of the Act was to protect mentally ill persons and to do away with the stigma attached to mental illness, some of the sections would definitely cause the opposite effect.
They said that the conditions to be fulfilled to establish or maintain a psychiatric hospital were impractical and the Act was discriminatory on the ground that private mental hospitals require licence while Government hospitals are exempted.
The three-day 3rd annual conference of the association, which begins on November 15, will discuss all these issues including the implementation of the new Act. The theme of the conference is `Private psychiatry at cross roads'.
As many as 400 delegates are expected to participate in the conference.
Psychiatrists from Chattisgarh, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh will be presenting regional issues. On all three days, there will be a scientific session with updates on the latest developments in clinical psychiatry.
