Food processing body planned

NEW DELHI, Dec. 10

TO pave the way for an integrated food law, the Group of Ministers (GoM) is expected to meet on Wednesday, Mr N.T. Shanmugam, Minister of State for Food Processing said here on Tuesday.

The GoM will also examine the possibility of setting up a national food processing authority, besides the integrated law to replace the plethora of legislations governing the sector, the Minister said at a conference on food processing at the Confederation of Indian Food Trade Industry (CIFTI) annual general meeting.

He pointed out that the foreign direct investment in the sector had grown from Rs 7,032 crore at the beginning of the Ninth Five-Year Plan to Rs 10,839 crore at the end of the Plan.
