NEW DELHI, Dec. 11

SABSE Pehle. Sabse Tez. The race among the news channels has prompted innovation.

Zee News is trying to set a new trend by producing a telefilm revolving around last year's December 13, Parliament attack.

The film, titled December 13, incorporates exclusive Zee News footage on the Parliament attack last year while portraying behind-the-scene events. For instance, exclusive pictures of the wanted terrorist, Gazi Baba, have been used in the telefilm.

Mr Laxmi Goel, Director, News Group, said the telefilm would be shown on December 13 in Zee News, the flagship Zee TV and the Alpha channels.

The channel would be open to sharing the film with other channels. "If other channels show interest in airing the telefilm, we will consider it. So far, we have not initiated talks with anybody," he said.

The channel is not forsaking the commercial opportunity and is looking at attracting advertisers for the telefilm. Mr Vinod Kapari, the Executive Producer of the film, feels that the telefilm would be a trendsetter and other channels would follow suit.

Competition among news channels is hotting up with at least three-four other news channels set to go on air next year. Zee News is also looking at launching some more channels and an English channel seems to be quite a possibility. "We have a lot of plans and could be considering the option of an English channel. But nothing has been finalised," Mr Goel said.

In the contest among news channels, differentiation becomes important. Mr Goel said that Zee News would like to focus on issues that affect the common man. "We wish to portray reality and take up real issues. Our 25 episodes on Indian rivers were very well received," he said.

Zee News has been gearing up to take on TV Today's Aaj Tak. The channel recently went in for some upgradation and also claims to have beaten Aaj Tak in its coverage of the Akshardhaam Temple attack.
