Alliances & Joint Ventures BHEL plans tie-up with IT major Our Bureau
BANGALORE, Dec. 16 BHEL, which has put service exports high on its new business priorities, is working on plans to provide remote services through a joint venture with a domestic IT major. Mr K.G. Ramachandran, CMD, told a news conference today that BHEL, which services three out of four electrical users, needs software development competency and improved marketing skills for its remote, overseas services. It is in the final stages of entering into a tie-up with "a strong IT company" shortly. BHEL would be the minority stakeholder, he said declining to give details. According to him, "Service export is just beginning to happen and has big potential. We would like to enhance this area by providing IT-enabled remote services in places with serious shortage of skills." Along with projects, its current niche, the Rs 7,500-crore PSU plans to improve its global presence in products and component supplies to its collaborators. Some star products have been identified for exports. There are plenty of opportunities and it has bid for two Bangla gas-based projects. It expects an overall sales growth of 8-10 per cent for the year. Mr Ramachandran said for the year ended March 2002, BHEL's exports stood at Rs 1,056 crore or a growth of 13.5 per cent over the previous year and is aiming at 15 per cent export growth during the 2002-07 period. Its Electroporcelains (or EPD), Electronics and Electronics Divisions in Bangalore have received the OHSAS-18001 certification for occupational health from DNV. Mr Ramachandran said BHEL is the first central PSU in Bangalore to receive this recognition along with ISO 14001 and ISO 9001. The EPD is the first insulator-manufacturing unit to get the health, safety and environment system.
