IT-enabled Services More thrust on ITES, biotech sectors necessary: Naidu Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, Dec.17 THE Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Tuesday emphasised the need to focus on hardware and IT-enabled services and biotechnology as these two areas have the potential to bring in several changes in the way we live and communicate. The emergence of the services economy has changed and forced managers and policy makers everywhere to recognise the human face of the organisation. This, in turn, has received an influential twist and boost from the knowledge economy. Even the public sector is feeling the pressures of change, and not only from divestments to adopt to new models, Mr Naidu said while addressing the inaugural session of the meeting organised by Tata Consultancy Services and the Indian National Academy of Engineers. "While profitability and sustenance guide the reshaping of business models across the globe, we need to draw parallel from the success stories in the South East Asian countries and China," he said. Full benefits of technology cannot be derived unless complimentary investments are made in human resources and infrastructure. In the current scenario, with reforms underway, the Government's role is increasingly coming down from being a regulator to a facilitator, he added. The best way to achieve all round development is by encouraging public-private participation which would ensure that we keep pace with other developing nations, he said. "With the opening up of the telecom sector, we have already seen long distance tariffs dropping significantly and if the Government decides to encourage unlimited private sector participation, we will soon have a situation were voice could be free and only data services will be charged. This day is not far off, experts predict," he said.
