HYDERABAD, Dec. 17

NAGARJUNA Fertilisers & Chemicals Ltd (NFCL), Kakinada, the flagship company of the Nagarjuna Group, has bagged the Environment Protection Award in the nitrogenous fertiliser plants category for the year 2001-02.

The award is given by the Fertiliser Association of India (FAI) and the winner is selected out of both private and public sector fertilisers companies all over the country, according to a company release on Tuesday.

The NFCL, Kakinada has made an effort to protect environment, conserve natural resources and develop and maintain over 700 acres of green belt in the area.

This is the third award for the company in the field of environment after the implementation of ISO 14001 EMS in May 2000 at the Kakinada plant site, the release adds.

The company has installed a number of liquid and air pollution treatment and control measures and adopted strategies to reduce and recycle wastes.

The entire treated effluent is pumped into the greenbelt developed in an area of 747 acres and having more than 3,50,000 plants, comprising over 170 species for irrigation via a holding pond where fish are bred to monitor the level of pollution.

The company conforms to the principle of `zero discharge of liquid effluents' outside the factory, the release says.
