`Hurdles in IT Act use must be removed'

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, Dec. 17

INDIA is among the few countries to have an IT (Information Technology) Act in place and we should identify and remove the remaining legal hurdles to have a headstart in its implementation, said Dr R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India.

Addressing Indocrypt 2002, the third international conference on cryptology in India, Dr Chidambaram complemented the contributions made by institutions such as the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, Indian Institute of Technology's (IITs) and the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT).

He said the country should move fast towards creating an atmosphere of confidence where e-transactions become the norm of the day. The sign language has always been there but it was not developed enough to provide secure communication in the era of technology, where fast and secure communications is the key to success.

Disciplines like the cryptography, with its focus on encryption and decryption, need to be encouraged and widely used in this emerging technology scenario, he said. Dr V.P. Gulati, Director, IDBRT, said cryptographic research is essential in a scenario where security of transaction is a major concern, especially in the banking and financial sector where large transactions need to be absolutely secure. IDBRT, as a certifying authority, will actively spearhead trust in electronic transactions, and banks and financial institutions need to adapt to the changing technology scenario to offer competitive facilities to the customers.

The Indocrypt conference, organised by the IDRBT and the Cryptographic Research Society of India, provides a quality forum for cryptography.
