Bengali version of Windows on anvil

Our Bureau

KOLKATA, Dec. 17

THE Bengali version of Microsoft Windows will be ready by October 2003.

Following approval of the version from Microsoft Corporation, Microsoft India has sought the West Bengal Goverment's help and advice on issues relating to the accuracy of the Bengali language. The move is expected to facilitate IT enablement of rural Bengal in a major way.

Microsoft India, which had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the State Government in August 2001 for preparing an IT roadmap for the State Government departments and assisting in the creation of a citizens database, signed another MoU for its revalidation till December 2003. Mr Rajiv Nair, President of Microsoft India, briefed the media after the signing of the MoU here. The MoU of 2001 had other components such as providing IT training to government staff and providing subsidised software in schools in the State, among others.

Mr Nair said that, as part of the State Government's e-governance initiatives, Microsoft had provided help - through the National Informatics Centre - for and records management in the state.
