IT-enabled Services NeST call centre to go on stream in January Our Bureau
KOCHI, Dec. 17 THE Kochi-based NeST group of companies is all set to commence its first international call centre in the State from the first week of January next year. The 1,000-seat call centre will start its operations from Kochi. Around 100 seats have been planned in the phase which will be increased to 500 by the end of March 2003, Mr N. Jehangir, Managing Director, said. The total investment for the project is estimated to be Rs 10 crore and there are also plans to start domestic call centre service, he added. The group has availed of the service of Ms Kathy Sisk, a well-known call centre trainer and President of the US-based OfKathy Sisk Enterprises, to provide training to candidates recruited for the call centre. As many as 32 agents have been recruited so far which will be increased to 1,500, Mr Jehangir said. The centre, which has a 48-seater facility, will function only at night in accordance with American working hours. A detailed list of American products will be supplied to the centre which will facilitate the operator to supply the necessary information to the customer. India is expected to be a major destination for setting up call centres. According to a study carried out by the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom), call centres would provide employment to 250,000 people by 2007-08 and generate revenue of Rs 8,000 crore. Today, according to Nasscom, there are 60 companies in the call centre business in the country, employing 80,000 agents who generate a business of Rs 1,500 crore. In order to meet the growing international demand for cost-effective customer-oriented call centres, many organisations worldwide are outsourcing these services to India, which has the intrinsic strength to become a major player in the call centre arena.
