How good is your TQ?

YOUR IQ, EQ, FQ (fashion quotient) scores are pretty impressive. But you may still find yourself being rejected for that much-desired job. Then it's time to check your TQ (Training Quotient). Very soon, companies in India will start considering this factor while recruitment. In fact, the British Psychological Society has developed a Test for Selection and Training, which will be brought to India by Team Value Profiling Services, a Bangalore-based HR consultancy firm. According to Mr G. Prahlad Rao, Managing Partner, TVPS, "This determines your ability to move from zero to full speed, a significant factor in a leadership role." He says studies have shown that while IQ and EQ can change with age, the TQ score is what you show at the age of 16." HR experts feel while IQ is more a measure of the ability to perform, TQ is going to determine mental horsepower. In other words, TQ is the ability to respond to training.

Currently TVPS offers a Test for Selection and Training as part of the Thomas Profiling test. Along with this the employer can also get a Human Job Analysis (HJA), a Personal Profile Analysis (PPA) and Team Analysis System (TAS) in the candidate's portfolio.

TVPS is the exclusive distributor for Thomas Profiling in India. This profiling is done during recruitment, appraisals, training and manpower development. The five-minute profiling test is based on the fact that while intelligence and skills can be measured, behaviour is not that easy to assess. The PPA that Thomas Profiling provides is based on the four basic human characteristics - Dominance, Influence over others, Steadiness and Compliance - that essentially comprise behaviour at work. The scores are analysed to get an insight into the candidate's strengths and weaknesses.

"In a study we did of the sales team of an auto manufacturer in India, we profiled the sales force against the actual job profile. The results showed three categories of people: compatible, not compatible and trainable. And we also found that the sales people in the first category were contributing the maximum to the sales volume." This give the company a plan for future hires.

Mr Rao says Thomas Profiling can also be administered to build the right team, to assess the team's strengths when a new member joins it and when an existing employee quits.

Does Thomas Profiling help during layoffs, say, who should go and who should stay? "Thomas Profiling is more about selection rather than rejection. I would say it determines who should not be laid off, rather than who should get the axe," he says. In India, TVPS' clients include Bharti Group, Citicorp, Cisco, Hindustan Lever, I-Flex Solutions, Johnson & Johnson, Hindustan Motors, Ranbaxy, Shoppers Stop, Telco Titan, BHEL and the Indian Railways Board among others.
