Tirupur textile SMEs plan visit to Italy

G. Gurumurthy

The visiting Tirupur SMEs are likely to sign an MOU with Treviso cluster companies for joint venture, after their scheduled meeting on January 23 at Treviso.

DELEGATES representing at least 15 small and medium knitwear manufacturing units from Tirupur are scheduled to undertake a visit to the Treviso textile cluster in Italy next month, raising the hopes for a possible Indo-Italian collaborative venture in textiles.

The delegation, to be led by the President of Tirupur Exporters Association, Mr A. Sakthivel, would leave for Italy next month. Mr R.C.M. Reddy, member-secretary of the Textiles Committee that is involved in the Tirupur cluster development programme, will also be a member of the delegation, according to Tirupur knitwear industry sources.

The business visit has been programmed under the initiative of the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce, the nodal agency for exploring the joint venture collaboration between Tirupur-Treviso clusters.

The 15 Tirupur SMEs identified for participating in joint venture with Treviso cluster industries are all the active exporting units with their annual export trade value in the Rs 25-30 crore bracket.

The visiting Tirupur SMEs are likely to sign an MOU with Treviso cluster companies for joint venture, after their scheduled meeting on January 23 at Treviso, the sources said.

The visit by the Tirupur units cluster comes in the wake of a visit of business delegation from Treviso to Tirupur, under the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce, in October to explore the joint venture possibilities.

It is said that about 10 or so Treviso companies, keen on garment outsourcing from Tirupur, may be entering into the joint venture proposals.

Besides participation in the equity of the Tirupur companies, the Italian collaborators would provide technical know how in garmenting to the Indian garment units.

New range of machinery from the Italian textile machinery makers could also be made available through the Indo-Italian soft-loan credit package operated by the National Small Industries Corporation, it is said.

Treviso cluster, which has signed up with the Tirupur-based TEA-NIFT Institute, is also expected to offer skill development training for the students of the institute under exchange programmes.
