`Industries should take care of environment'

Our Bureau

INDUSTRY should look at commitment to social and environment responsibilities as much as competitiveness, the Chairman and Managing Director of TVS Motor Company Ltd, Mr Venu Srinivasan, has said.

The corporate sector should play a proactive role in the social environment. This would be key to economic development in India, which is a melting pot of diverse cultures. No segment of society can adopt a laissez faire attitude to political developments or simply blame another segment, he said.

Environmental degradation should be another area of concern with an awareness of the need to arrest the deterioration. Water wars could become a reality if the natural resources are over exploited, he added.

According to him such commitments should be an inherent part of the value system, which help build a team with a common goal. India should look at facing issues in the backdrop of the `brutal and bruising' competition that it faces in the international arena.

He said the companies should look at developing excellence in their fields of endeavour with a unique strategy, which is as crucial as the unique selling proposition in marketing. Companies fail despite having a good product because others may have made it better. To achieve this level excellence in human resource and continuous learning were essential.

Companies should experiment, keep records and learn from the experience. There are too few companies in India that have achieved such excellence and more are needed, he said.

Mr Srinivasan was addressing the graduation ceremony of the second batch of Post-graduate Diploma in Management, Institute of Financial Management and Research here on Wednesday.
