Karnataka unveils policy for export thrust

BANGALORE, Jan. 10

THE long-awaited five-year export policy, which aims to nearly double Karnataka's exports to 15 per cent by 2007, got the approval of the State Cabinet today.

The policy proposes to give green cards to exporters, provide market development support and market research, build brand equity for local products, support for technology upgradation and awards for excellence in exports, the Information Minister, Mr Kagodu Thimmappa, said at a media briefing.

For the year 2001-02, the State showed a 25 per cent growth in exports over the previous year, with an export turnover of Rs 20,145 crore. The previous year's figure was Rs 16,027 crore.

The policy will provide an institutional framework and infrastructure to promote exports through industrial parks, he said.

The Cabinet also decided on having a core advisory group to assist it in implementing the recommendations of the Public Sector Restructuring Committee (PSRC). The proposed core group will be empowered to hire an adviser.

The PSRC headed by Mr P. Padmanabha has suggested disinvestment in 38 State PSUs that are non-core or unviable. Last year, a separate Department of Disinvestment & Public Enterprise Reforms was also set up to take the process forward.
