Over 690 mills in TN told to file claims on wages

CHENNAI, Jan. 10

THE Special Industrial Tribunal constituted to look into the spinning mills' workers wage settlement has summoned more than 690 mill managements to file their claims before the tribunal on January 23.

Officials concerned told Business Line that the 13 unions representing over 2.5 lakh workers in 1,692 mills have filed their claim statement on December 18, and more than 1000 mills represented by the individual counsels have filed counter statement.

The tribunal has advertised for the rest to file their counters. The advertisement has also urged the 1,692 mills concerned to collect a copy of the claim statement filed by the workers' unions.

Incidentally, the tenure of the special tribunal also concludes on January 23 and the formalities for extending the tenure have been initiated, they said. It was constituted in July 2002 to adjudicate in the dispute between the workers and the managements regarding wage settlement. Earlier efforts by the labour department officials and the industrial tribunal proved futile with the managements insisting on a mill-wise settlement while the workers pushed for an industry-wide settlement. The issue was then referred to the special tribunal under Section 10(1) read with Section 10(5) of the Industrial Disputes Act.

The tribunal will address the claims including revision of basic wages, allowances including dearness allowance, house rent and night shift allowance, profit sharing on increases in productivity following modernisation or rationalisation.

Officials said that the January 23 deadline is a crucial date for the managements that are yet to file their counter claims to state their side of the issue.
