Shipping Industry & Economy - Education Kochi made exam centre for merchant shipping Sajeev Kumar
KOCHI, Dec. 10 THE Directorate-General of Shipping has declared Mercantile Marine Department, Kochi as an examination centre for conducting examinations under the Merchant Shipping (STCW for seafarers) Rules 1998. Approval for conducting examinations for Marine Engineer Officer Class III and IV and Navigational Watch Keeping Officer (Near Coastal Voyage) has already been obtained from Chief Examiner of Engineers and Chief Examiner of Masters and Mates respectively, Mr M.P. John, Surveyor in charge said. The Mercantile Marine Department, Kochi is gearing to commence these examinations as soon as possible, he added. To declare Kochi as an examination and assessment centre was a long-pending demand of seafarers in the State. The issue was taken up by the Kerala Maritime Forum, a group of personnel from various fields of maritime industry in the State, with the Shipping Ministry. Currently most of the examinations under Merchant Shipping are conducted at examination centres at MMD's of Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. This is a major achievement considering the advantages to the mariners hailing from Kerala as almost 20 per cent of nearly 40,000 of all the seagoing personnel of India hail from Kerala, Captain Verghese Kuruvilla, Chairman of the forum said.
