Sorabjee seeks more details on oil PSUs

NEW DELHI, Jan. 10

THE Attorney-General, Mr Soli Sorabjee, has sought more information from the Government before framing an opinion on disinvestment in HPCL and BPCL.

Government sources said the A-G sought more information to finalise his views during a meeting with the Disinvestment Secretary, Mr Pradip Baijal, here on Thursday.

The AG's opinion is now expected after his return from Mauritius on January 15, the sources said.

The Disinvestment Ministry had sought the A-G's opinion on whether disinvestment in the two oil companies would require a repeal or amendment to the Acts through which these entities were nationalised in the 1970s.

The Cabinet Committee on Disinvestment, at a meeting on December 27, had deferred taking a decision on the modalities of sale in HPCL and BPCL till the AG gave his opinion on the matter.

The Disinvestment Minister, Mr Arun Shourie, and his team had met Mr Sorabjee last week to present the facts of the case.
