Roadways Expressway blueprint unveiled to MLAs High-speed arterial road to link all major centres Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Jan. 27 THE proposed 507-km-long Kerala Expressway connecting Kasaragod and Thiruvananthapuram will take off from Kazhakkottam Junction on NH 47, 15 km north of here. In a presentation to the MLAs here, authorities of the nodal Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala Ltd said the access controlled high-speed corridor would serve as the arterial facility linking almost all the important centres of the State. The cost of construction for the Rs 6400-crore project has been put at Rs 3,877 crore, land acquisition and rehabilitation costs at Rs 1,758 crore and overheads at Rs 765 crore. The State Government and the strategic partners will share the equity at Rs 696 crore each; the loan component has been estimated to be Rs 3,250 crore. The project is envisaged to collect a total cess of Rs 2,639 crore over a period of 10 years. The toll rates compare favourably with those charged on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Coimbatore Bypass, the Udaipur Bypass and the Moradabad Bypass, it was stated. With 19 interchange points, the expressway affords the ease of uninterrupted fast travel, cutting substantially on vehicle operating costs. This will enable a person travelling non-stop from Kasaragod in the North to reach Thiruvananthapuram in no more than five hours. The four-lane NH bypass from Kazhakkottam, the starting point, will provide connectivity downstream to Parassala, the southernmost point in the State. The expressway would traverse north through a link road to reach the first interchange at Pallippuram. The second interchange is at Kulamada near Parippally. The alignment passes between NH 47 and MC Road and the next interchange is located at Ezhukone on NH 208 in Kollam district. The interchange in Alappuzha district is at Kulanada, 7 km south of Chenganoor on the MC Road. The alignment further passes north through the eastern side of MC Road and intercepts the State Highway (SH) 7 (Thiruvalla-Kumbazha road) at Iraviperoor in Pathanamthitta district. The interchanges in Kottayam district are near Pampadi on KK Road and Kurvilangad on MC Road. The alignment then passes northwest and crosses NH 49 at Puthenkurisu and NH 47 at Athani in Ernakulam district where interchanges are provided. The interchanges in Thrissur district are at Kallattumkara on Potta-Moonnupeedika road, Palakkal, 5 km south of Thrissur, and at Parannur on Kunnamkulam-Kuttipuram State Highway. The alignment crosses Bharatapuzha at Kudallor and intercepts the Malappuram- Kottakal road near Kottakkal, and NH 213 at Pulickal where interchanges are provided. Further north, the interchanges are provided at Kunnamangalam on NH 212 and at Mundot on the Koyilandi-Thamarassery SH 34. The alignment then passes almost parallel to NH 17, about 10 km to the east. Interchanges are provided at Pachapoika on Kannur-Koothuparamba road and at Karimbam on the Thaliparamba-Iritty SH 36. The northernmost interchange is at Chalinkal on NH 17. This four-lane facility will in turn provide connectivity to Manjeshwaram, the northernmost point of the State, and beyond.
