Water transport workers to join Parliament March

KOCHI, Feb. 6

THE Water Transport Workers Federation of India will participate in the Parliament March on February 26, organised by the port and dock workers of all major ports.

The federation's working committee meeting in Chennai had decided to participate in the strike pressing for the eight demands of the workers, agreed upon in the Labour Assembly held in New Delhi in July last year.

The Labour Assembly, of over 5,000 representatives consisting of central trade unions, federations and independent organisations, had agreed on eight demands which included to retain profitably-run PSUs in the public sector, strengthening labour laws to enhance and widen the reach of statutory benefits and rights to all section of workers, etc. The demands included stoppage of selling of the port's assets and rights in the name of development and privatisation, curtailing of productivity-linked rewards in the port sector, etc.

A statement issued here said the affiliated unions of the Federation of Indian Ports at JNPT, Mumbai, Kolkata, Paradip, Vizag, Chennai, Tuticorin, Port Blair and Kochi had decided to observe March 18 as Demands Day in all ports. The meeting of the working committee was presided over by the Federation President, Mr M.M. Lawrence, the release added.
