Economy Industrial production index up in 2000-01 Mony K. Mathew
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Feb. 9 THE industrial production index of Kerala moved up by a few notches in 2000-01 from the level achieved the previous year. According to Kerala Economy-2002, compiled by the Economic and Statistics Department of the State Government, the general index, with the base year of 1980-81, rose to 360.20 in 2000-01 from 351.243 the previous year. Item-wise, the indices for the manufacture of non-metallic mineral products, basic metals and alloys, machinery and equipment, transport equipment and parts and electricity generation, transmission and distribution registered increase during the year. At the same time, there was a decline in the manufacture of food products, beverages, cotton textiles and textile products, wool silk and man-made fibre textiles, wood and products, basic chemicals and products and plastics, petroleum and coal products. As per the latest data incorporated in the publication, the number of small-scale industrial units in the State went up to 2.58 lakh as on March 31, 2002 from 2.40 lakh on the same date the previous year. However, the number of sick SSI units also rose in tandem to 5,526 from 5,065 during the period. Besides, 1,139 units were revived in 2001-02 as against 1,086 units the previous year. The total number of units assisted by Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) stood at 453 as on March 31, 2002 of which 422 were in the private sector and 31 in the public sector. The combined project cost of the KSIDC-assisted units in the private sector was Rs 3,858.50 crore, while that of the public sector was Rs 443.93 crore. In the power sector, the electricity generated marginally improved to 12,544 million units (MU) in 2001-02 from 12,484 (MU) the previous year. The number of consumers increased to 66 lakh from 64.46 lakh during the period, while the number of villages electrified remained at 1,384. On the other hand, the connected load for industrial (low and medium voltage) users dropped to 1,103 MW in 2001-02 from 1,668 MW the previous year. Similarly, the connected load for high and extra-high voltage industrial consumers also came down to 1,025 MW from 1,070 MW.
