US to tighten H1B visa norms

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, Feb. 21

THE US will tighten the regulations governing H1B visas and revise the ceiling for issuing such visas to ensure that only qualified information technology professionals enter the country, according to Mr James Sensenbrenner Jr., Chairman of the House of Judiciary Committee.

Addressing members of CII here, Mr Sensenbrenner said that a new ceiling for H1B visas would be set by May. The current ceiling for these visas is 1,95000. This will lapse in September 2003. Mr Sensenbrenner said the new regulations on student visas would not affect legitimate students from entering the US.
