Broadband PwC upbeat on sat broadband growth in India Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, March 4 THE market for satellite broadband equipment in India is expected to grow almost five times to about 110,000 units in the next five years. It will be driven by new applications such as distance education, Internet, rural connectivity, banking & finance and gaming, according to a new report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). The findings of the report on the VSAT industry, conducted for the financial year 2001-02, showed that Hughes was the leading service provider in India with 35 per cent of the market share. As per the report, "Over the last year, the industry has benefited greatly from increased adoption of IT by non-IT companies, favourable regulations and overall macro-economic business confidence. Given the market structure and growth opportunities, only the top 2-3 players may survive over the next 4-5 years. Hughes, being a top equipment vendor as well as a service provider, has compelling advantages to deliver an end-to-end solution to consumers." The report added, "Satellite communications will be the solution for the last mile access problem in a country like India. Terrestrial connections in our country are either unavailable or unreliable - whereas satellites provide ubiquitous and reliable coverage." The report said that the technology had matured over the last two years - with the provisioning of more and higher powered satellites over India. This would increase the bandwidth availability, which would lead to lower bandwidth costs. "Regulatory reforms - which allow smaller customer terminals, higher bandwidth transmission and use of foreign satellites for uplinking - has made the technology market-friendly," it added.
