Coconut Summit next month

KOCHI, April 2

THE World Coconut Summit 2003 will be held here during May 7 - 11 to discuss the issues facing the coconut farming community.

The summit, organised jointly by the Bharathiya Marketing Development Centre and the Bharathiya Science and Technology Development Centre, would be attended by the Union Agriculture Minister, Mr Ajit Singh, and the Union Ministers, Mr Hukum Dev Narayan Dev, Mr Sangapriya Gautham and Mr O Rajagopal.Experts from Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand are also expected to participate in the event, the summit officials said.

Sources said that as part of the Summit, a five-day techno-trade fair would also be held. Coconut nursery, coir products and handicraft items made of coconut shell, tree etc, would be on display. The Khadi and Village Industries Commission, the Nehru Yuva Kendra, the Central Handicrafts Department, the Defence Food Research Laboratory, etc would also take part in the exhibition. From Tamil Nadu alone 80 delegates are expected to participate, they said.

It would have the full participation of the Asia Pacific Coconut Community and the International Coconut Genetic Resources Network, they said.

They said, the event probably first of its kind to be held here, had the support and cooperation of the Union Ministries/ Departments of Agriculture, Rural Industries, Science and Technology, Food Processing, Rural Development, Youth Welfare, Non-conventional Energy, Culture, and the various States.
