Engineering Corporate - Announcements L&T clinches $100-m deal in W. Asia Our Bureau
MUMBAI, April 5 WHILE the Gulf States have been gripped by war tension, Larsen & Toubro has clinched a $100-million business deal in West Asia. L&T was awarded a contract last week by Qatar Petroleum for building two offshore oil field platforms. L&T has won the award against stiff competition from international bidders, according to Mr K. Venkataramanan, Director and President (Operations) L&T. The contract is for engineering, procurement and commissioning of the platforms, located east of Qatar. Under the contract, L&T has to fabricate and install three jacket structures, four bridges, two 45-men living quarters, two heli-decks and two power modules, Mr Venkataramanan said. The two platforms are for re-locating of an existing living quarter, he said. The structures will be fabricated in India and will be shipped to the offshore locations. The contract is for 24 months and scheduled for completion by December 2004. L&T has recently won similar international contracts in Tanzania, Kuwait, Oman and Sri Lanka. In Oman, the company is building a power plant, he said. According to Mr Venkataramanan, export orders, at around Rs 1,000 crore, account for 35-40 per cent of the company's order-book, and the major part of the order is from the oil and gas sector.
