VSNL to tap its other strengths

Our Bureau

MUMBAI, April 8

AS international long distance telephony gets more competitive, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd would leverage its other strengths such as its ISP subscriber base as well as subscribers to its corporate data services to get a foothold at the retail level, said Mr N. Srinath, Director (Operations), VSNL.

This would be in addition to its marketing alliance with the other telecom companies in the Tata fold

To this end, VSNL's national long distance plans were very much in progress, he said.

The NLD network - which has approval for 50 locations - already connects Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Tirupati and Bangalore. By the end of April it would connect the Delhi-Ahmedabad stretch as well. Later, it would be extended up to Amritsar in the north and Ernakulam in the south, he said.

On some stretches the company had also leased bandwidth, mainly from GAIL India Ltd, said Mr Srinath.

The corporate data services market is one of the fastest growing areas, said Mr Srinath. For this purpose the leased lines and VPNs, and Internet leased lines would all be built around the bandwidth that the company's NLD network provided, he said.

"We could also offer market our ILD services better with the help of NLD and NLD better with the help of the retail network of the Tata Indicom brand," said Mr Srinath.
