Tencel hopes to ride on `performance'

NEW DELHI, April 8

TENCEL Ltd, a member of the UK-based Accordis Group, hopes to ride on the current trend of increasing demand among apparel buyers for performance-oriented products.

"There is clear indication that performance products — wrinkle-free and water-repellent fabrics — are becoming a favourite among customers. A number of apparel makers have started to focus on such performance products. With such a trend, we are hopeful that our partners in India would sell at least 1-2 million metres of Tencel-based fabrics in the current fiscal," Mr Prem Sadhwani, Country Manager, Tencel Ltd, told Business Line.

Tencel is a brand name for lyocell, a man-made fibre made from the natural cellulose found in wood pulp. Mr Sadhwani said that Tencel's growth in India over the last few years could be assessed in terms of the number of partners — mills and fabric companies - with whom a business relationship has been forged.

"As against an initial level of two companies, we today have 12 partners who have a strong relationship with us," Mr Sadhwani said.

Leading Indian mills such as Arvind Mills Ltd, Ashima Ltd, Ramkumar Mills, Rajasthan Spinning, Nahar Fabrics, Mafatlal Industries are participating in the TENCEL Fabric Fair 2003 being organised by Tencel Ltd in association with the LNJ Bhilwara Group. The British Deputy High Commissioner, Mr Mark Runacres, inaugurated the two-day fair in the Capital here on Tuesday.

According to Mr Sadhwani, the ongoing US-Iraq war would have an impact on the "mood of buyers" from both the US and the Europe.

"The actual impact will be known by September or October. The preferences on colours may undergo a change. There may not be demand for red and dark shades," he said.
