Economic reforms

The editorial "Reforms, RIP" (Business Line,April 26) has lashed out the NDA Government on the internal contradictions over the economic reforms.

And the Congress(I), including the former Finance Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, is opposed to the reforms.

If elections are the main reason for political parties and leading individuals to oppose various proposals, does it not mean that the majority of the people are against these proposals? And if modifications are necessary should they not be studied, explained and introduced?

The Finance Minister, Mr. Jaswant Singh, may feel hurt with important Budget proposals set to be re-written. And it appears VAT is also in confusion.

"Jaswant concerned over State VAT laws `non-conformity'" (Business Line, April 26). As the Finance Minister has said, there is a need to follow a uniform framework and harmonise the basic law structure and VAT rates across States, if it has to bring the desired benefits.
