CII drive for revival of manufacturing sector

Our Bureau

KOCHI, April 28

THE Confederation of Indian Industry is organising a national debate throughout its entire network in the country to create awareness on the need for reviving the manufacturing industry.

It will be addressed by Dr C.K. Prahalad, Harvey C. Fruehauf Professor of Corporate Strategy, Michigan Business School, US. This will be broadcast on CNBC on April 30 and shown live on the CII Web site, www.ciionline.org.

The objective of the programme is to generate massive participation of manufacturing managers, supervisors, trade unionists etc on the same day with the same agenda in order to debate how to promote the manufacturing industry in the country and thereby create wealth and jobs.

The programme represents the first step in a national revival campaign for the manufacturing industry in India, a press release issued here said.

About 100 centres in the country will have groups of people from all levels in industry watching this programme and interacting with Dr Prahalad. The programme will commence at 11 am with a presentation by Dr Prahalad followed by interaction.

India's ability to grow at 10 per cent and to create 10 million plus jobs required that the country should develop a strong manufacturing base. India can become an alternative location to China as a manufacturing base.

Most importantly, India has demonstrated its ability to be a world-class manufacturing location, in many cases at a fraction of the cost of similar locations in industrially advanced countries, the release added.
