Kochi aims to be a `green' city

Sajeev Kumar V.

KOCHI, April 28

THE Paristhithi Bhavan project launched by the Kochi Corporation has envisaged projects aimed at turning Kochi into an eco-friendly urban society.

As part of the project, several core committees have been formed and had initiated discussions for its implementation in the city in a phased manner. The Paristhithi Bhavan project has been included in the Tenth Plan programme of the Kochi Corporation. The core committees under the project included environmental education and training, legal matters, public relations, building and public works, roads and transport, greening, etc.

An executive committee will administer the Paristhithi Bhavan. A general environment advisory council will provide recommendations to the executive committee. The council will have as many as 60 members from governmental and non-governmental institutions. The advisory council will discuss the recommendations given by the subject core committees. The executive committee of Paristhithi Bhavan will forward the suggestions to Corporation's Standing Committee on Planning. The Corporation council will take the final decision.

The core committee on environmental education and training will focus on spreading awareness on environment-related topics among the public. Government and private institutions will participate in the implementation of the programmes envisaged by the committee. The core committee on greening will introduce programmes for the proper maintenance and management of trees in the city. The committee will initiate steps to plant trees in open spaces, parks and other select areas.

The core committee on building and public works will try to evolve an eco-friendly type of construction in the city. It will issue guidelines on how to build houses without affecting the environment. It will also evolve suggestions on how to develop an eco-friendly method of construction in the city in future.

While the building and public works committee will focus on developing an eco-friendly method, the core committee on roads and transport will formulate projects aimed at improving the roads and transport system in the corporation. The core committee on solid waste management will provide education on solid waste management techniques. For this, it will organise seminars and workshops and efforts will be made to introduce more facilities.
