Bengal power consumers to oppose new Bills

Our Bureau

KOLKATA, April 28

THE All-Bengal Electricity Consumers Association has chalked out an agitation programme to protest the recent Central and State-level enactments pertaining to the electricity sector as well as the enhanced electricity tariff.

The Association general secretary, Mr Sanjit Biswas, said at a press conference that letters have been written to the President of India urging him not to give his nod to the Electricity Bill 2001 and the Electricity Regulatory Commission Act, (West Bengal Amendment), 2003. A demonstration would be held before the cash office of the power utilities, especially CESC and WBSEB, on April 30.

He said that while the Central Bill was being opposed since it treated electricity as a commodity, paving the way for full commercialisation of the sector, the West Bengal Act was being opposed since it had initiated the process of introduction of a flat rate of tariff." Although this was proposed to be done in phases, but once in place it would lead to trebling of tariffs, he feared.

The association was also against the new 2003-04 interim rates announced by the West Bengal Electricity Regulatory Commission last week.
