Shaw Wallace beer division head exits

Boby Kurian

SABMiller's management takeover of Shaw Wallace Breweries has produced the first major change in operational structure. Mr Deepak Chaudhuri, Director and Head of Shaw Wallace Breweries, has quit the company immediately after the Manu Chhabria family-controlled Jumbo Group ceded control to the world's second largrest brewer.

Mr Chaudhuri, brought into the company by the late Manu Chhabria, was at the helm of Shaw Wallace beer division for two years. Earlier he had a fairly long association with the archrival, UB group.

The exit of Mr Chaudhuri, considered close to the Chhabrias, signals an overhaul in the operational management of Shaw Wallace Breweries following the takeover by SABMiller.

When contacted, Mr Chaudhuri told Business Line that he was moving into the Jumbo Group and would take up another assignment for the Chhabrias outside the beer business. "I quit after the management control of Shaw Wallace Breweries was given to SABMiller," he said.

Earlier this week, the multinational picked up 50 per cent stake and management control in Shaw Wallace Breweries in a deal estimated at $132.8 million.

Meanwhile, SABMiller has started gearing up for total management control over Shaw Wallace's beer business. Top SABMiller officials have been camping in Mumbai for the last two days meeting up with the key functionaries in Shaw Wallace Breweries. The multinational is also expected to announce a new Chief Financial Officer to oversee and revamp the finances of Shaw Wallace Breweries.
