BPL eyes Rs 60 cr from PC sales

KOLKATA: BPL Telecom Pvt Ltd hopes to generate Rs 60 crore from sales of personal computers in the current fiscal. Overall, the BPL group company is hopeful of recording a turnover of Rs 240 crore during the year ending March 31, 2004. In 2002-03, BPL Telecom notched up a turnover of Rs 150 crore.

Stating this during an interface with presspersons here, the eastern regional head of BPL Telecom Pvt Ltd, Mr Yogesh Dubey, said the company was hopeful of selling 30,000 desktops and 1,500-2,000 laptops in 2003-04. In the eight months ended March 2003, the company sold 5,000 desktop computers.

The company launched its range of laptop computers in the eastern region last week. The range of three laptop computers has been priced at between Rs 60,000 and Rs 1,20,000. The company already has on offer four desktop models. All the products are manufactured at the company's manufacturing facility in Kerala.

Mr Dubey said the Indian market for desktops has been estimated at over 15 lakh units per annum. This year, about 60,000 laptops were expected to be sold in the country, up from 40,000 units that were sold last year.
