Trade & Labour Unions Kerala for ban on demos in Secretariat vicinity Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, June 20 THE Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, has said that the State Government would seek to evolve a consensus among various political parties on the issue of imposing a ban on mass demonstrations in front of the Government Secretariat and along the arterial Mahatma Gandhi Road, which have often put traders, commuters, students and the general public at large to tremendous hardship. While replying to a submission, Mr Antony said he agreed with the member piloting the same that the need for imposing such a ban has never been more felt than now. "I wonder if there is any other State Capital in the country that witnesses as many number of demonstrations, often resulting in violent clashes with the police, as Thiruvananthapuram does," he said. Whenever the clashes have turned violent, the bustling city centre and business establishments in its immediate neighbourhood had to down shutters leading to huge loss in business, apart from collateral damage resulting from stone-throwing and other violent forms of protest. While moving the submission, the member had pointed out that agitations were banned within a 5 km area of the Government Secretariat in West Bengal. This was more or less was the case same in respect of Parliament and the Central Secretariat in New Delhi. It was high time that Kerala also followed suit and ensured security to life and property of the common man.
