Drive to curb `seconds sale' of liquor in Karnataka

Our Bureau

BANGALORE, June 20

THE Karnataka Excise (Sale of Indian and Foreign Liquors) (Amendment) Rules, 2003 now prohibit the sale of liquor bottles that do not have the maximum retail price on them.

A State Government notification to that effect is aimed at curbing the sale of "seconds" liquor in the State, as well as widen the tax net. The Government also recently announced a reduction in the excise duty by 50 per cent to make the State `seconds free'.

Of the 10,000-crore litre of liquor sold in Karnataka every year, revenues on over three quarters of that was lost to the State with the rampant sale of `seconds' liquor, it is reported. Distributor are also now required to replace the excise adhesive labels on liquor bottles with holograms containing the specifications listed out by the Excise Commissioner, according to the State Government notification.
