Water Kerala: 87 water projects executed Our Bureau
THIRUVANATHAPURAM: The State Government has completed 87 drinking water projects, benefiting around 8.7 lakh people in the State over the last two years. According to a review report, of the total projects implemented, 82 were rural projects and the remaining five urban projects. In the rural areas, the drinking water supply rose to 59 per cent from 55 per cent, while it was to 79 per cent from 77 per cent in urban areas. Besides, as many as 412 wards were provided drinking water supply by extending the existing pipelines. Water supply was also augmented in 7,444 wards, according to the report. The Government was also able to resume work on all the drinking water projects which had been held up at various parts of the State. A taskforce was formed for time-bound completion of all the projects. The work on the Hudco-aided project to augment drinking water supply to Kochi city and the neighbouring panchayats was accelerated during the period. This apart, work commenced on a major project, also being assisted by Hudco, for supply of water to Alapuzha and the neighbouring areas from Pampa river. The project, estimated to cost Rs 77.83 crore, is designed to take drinking water to more than two lakh people through pipelines. The Government allocated funds for implementing rural drinking water projects with the financial help of Nabard. A total of 15 projects were identified for implementation under the scheme, says the report.
