HYDERABAD, July 6

GEARING up for the upcoming Godavari Puskharam Festival, the Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Ltd (APTransco) is making arrangements to ensure reliable power along the places, which are being spruced up for 12-day event beginning on July 30.

"With a view to promote tourism, we are building permanent infrastructure at many locations at an estimated cost of Rs 6.9 crore in association with other Government departments," the Chairman and Managing Director of APTransco, Ms Rachel Chatterjee, has said.

"The arrangements will not only provide reliable power supply to the ghats but will further improve the power infrastructure at all the important temple towns such as Basara, Bhadrachalam, Kaleswaram and Rajahmundry," she said here in a press release today.

"About 80 per cent of works were completed so far. We expect to complete the remaining by July 15," she said.

One of the highlights of the project is extending power supply to Pattiseema Island Temple. "The 1.02-kilometre line, costing Rs 56 lakh, will be completed by July 10," she said.

She asked the district electricity authorities of distribution companies to coordinate with other departments and the district collectors.

According to Mr P. Gopal Reddy and Mr Y.G.K. Murthy, Chairmen and Managing Directors of Northern and Eastern Power Distribution Companies respectively, electrical infrastructure development activities had been taken up in 161 ghats along the banks of Godavari.

Meanwhile, Mr Kothapally Subbarayudu asked the APTransco officials and distribution companies to set up a high-level task force for overseeing Puskharam-related issues and ensure "uninterrupted power supply".

The Minister, who is in West Godavari district to take part in the ongoing Janmabhoomi programme, also asked them to establish special control rooms at all the critical locations that work round the clock, the press release added.
