`Sabotage' derails another train

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, July 6

IN yet another train accident in the State, the Pakala-Bellary Passenger train derailed in the early hours today between Madanapalle and Tummanagunta stations, killing the assistant driver and injuring many others.

Alleging that sabotage was behind the accident, the Minister of State for Railways, Mr Bandaru Dattatreya, said saboteurs removed some fishplates and placed boulders on the track leading to the derailment of the engine and three coaches. It is the second rail accident in the State in four days.

Mr T. Stanley Babu, General Manager of South Central Railway, and other senior officials have rushed to the accident site.

A medical relief van with 13 doctors and paramedical staff too reached the spot, an SCR spokesman said. State Transport Corporation buses were pressed into service for the stranded passengers, he added.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety (South) will conduct an inquiry into the incident. Railway officials said Assistant Driver D. Mani was killed in the accident and another engine driver, N.S. Gupta, received head injuries. Twenty-one passengers received minor injuries and were administered first aid.

Meanwhile, the SCR has cancelled "until further advice" Guntakal-Pakala-Guntakal Passenger, Bellary-Pakala-Bellary Passenger and Guntaka-Pakala-Guntakal Venkatadri Express due to the derailment, an SCR release said.

In a separate release, the SCR announced that Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam-Vijayawada Ratnachal Expresses will have a halt at the Nidadavolu Railway Station from July 15.

Also, due to speed restrictions and track maintenance work on the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) section, 2617/2618 Ernakulam-Nizamuddin-Ernakulam Mangala Express has been diverted via Nizamuddin, Itarsi, Bhallarshah, Vijayawada, Renigunta, Katpadi, Jolarpet Junction, Palghat and Ernakulam for a period of 15 days, beginning July 5.
