Taxation Service tax: Grey areas still remain, says CII Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, July 6 IN an effort to seek clarifications from the authorities on various issues regarding service tax, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is organising a day-long seminar here on July 10. In a statement, the chamber has said that the seminar will be attended by the Member, CBEC, Mr Mahendra Prasad, and the Director-General, DGST, Mr K.P. Singh. Besides, the Chairman of Govinda Rao Committee on Service Tax, and Director of NIPFP, Dr Govinda Rao, and the Partner of Ernst and Young, Mr Sachin Menon, are also expected to address the gathering. The statement points out that from July this year, seven new services, including commercial training and coaching centres, technical testing and analysis, technical inspection and certification, among others, have been brought under the service tax net. While the Government notification has clearly spelt out the new services, there are some grey areas that have emerged. In the business auxiliary services category, call centres, medical transcription services and commission agency services have been exempted from the service tax. However, it is not clear whether the exemption to call centres will still be available where such services are provided through any other medium other than telephone, such as in person, email or Internet, the statement added.
