Housing loans

This is with reference to "Will housing loans prove potential NPAs?" (Business Line, July 14). Most banks are giving out housing loans left, right and centre. It is only a question of time before the banks end up with huge NPAs.

The present situation is reminiscent of the "poojari" loan days. As pointed out in the piece, it would be a daunting task to liquidate the collateral into redeemable security.

At the most the assets will wither away in the hands of the bankers in the event of default in repayment. Who knows? The bankers may decide to gift away these assets to the defaulters at the cost of depositors. One can only hope that the news item has opened the eyes of the bankers in safeguarding the interest of depositors.
