Broadband Marketing - Market Shares Bharti Broadband gets 50% data market G. Rambabu
New Delhi , Aug. 1 IN less than two months since starting commercial operations for international data bandwidth, Bharti Broadband Networks Ltd (BBNL) has garnered close to 50 per cent market share. According to Mr Ashok Juneja, CEO, BBNL, the broadband and data division of the Bharti group has enough orders on hand. Prior to the commercial launch of international data bandwidth by the company, VSNL had an unchallenged monopoly in this sector catering to the data needs of Internet service providers and multinational corporate customers, he said. "We have made steady progress in the sale of lease/sale of data and bandwidth. In a little over one month of the commercial launch of these services using the Network i2i submarine cable as the primary infrastructure backbone, the company is well on its way to dislodging VSNL from its position. Bharti has not just resorted to aggressive price-cutting, but offers a superior network, with the i2i supporting a bandwidth of up to 8.4 terabits of capacity", Mr Juneja told Business Line. He noted that since the launch of operations, bandwidth prices had crashed by 50 per cent, forcing VSNL to bring its own tariffs on par. The market as such had expanded, with many of VSNL clients taking additional bandwidth from Bharti. As such, the churn in this sector had been low, he said. While a majority of Bharti's clients are ISPs such as Dishnet and Hathway, the list also includes names such as Oracle, Microsoft, Visa, J.P. Morgan and Citibank. The company is also in advanced stages of negotiation with some other leading players in the info-communications landscape of the country.
