Software Marketing - Market Shares IBM aims to be top IT firm in India soon Our Bureau
New Delhi , Aug. 1 LEVERAGING on its services business, IBM, the global computing giant, hopes to become the largest IT company in India "in a reasonably short period of time," a top company official said. "The vision for IBM in India is to be the number one in terms of market share by delivering value and customer satisfaction," said Mr Abraham Thomas, Managing Director of IBM India Ltd. Speaking to Business Line here, Mr Thomas said IBM would capitalise on the strengths as a complete, end-to-end solution provider, who can supply hardware, software and solutions, to achieve its goal. "Customers today don't want hardware, software and solutions separately from different vendors," he said, adding that the worldwide acquisition of PwC consulting by IBM helped the company immensely in catering to such demand now prevailing in the market. While IBM had the technology capability in the past, PwC Consulting brought in business consulting and domain expertise in a number of industries into the fold of IBM. About 800 PwC consultants have joined IBM in India consequent to the acquisition. The Indian market, which IBM estimates is worth $3-4 billion annually, is also shifting in the same direction as elsewhere in the world, with software and services driving the overall growth. Mr Thomas said the new strategy of IBM had started to pay off with the company achieving the number one slot in server sales. "We have grown at the rate of 50 per cent in India," he claimed. Asked about the personal computer business of IBM in India, Mr Thomas said the company had decided to focus on the business and government segments.
