Thailand keen on cooperation in IT

Bangalore , Aug. 8

THAILAND is keen on arriving at a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for bilateral cooperation with the Government of India and with Karnataka by October, ahead of the APEC meeting in Bangkok, according to the Thailand Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Korn Dabbaransi.

Mr Dabbaransi, who is leading a 100-member delegation, said the IT sector was a potential area for investment and co-operation between the two countries.

He also mediated an MoU between Liberta Technology of Thailand with AMD Technology of India. The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology of Thailand exchanged a bilateral cooperation note, with its counter part in India, which took forward the issues raised during the Thai PM's visit last year, according to Thai officials.

The understanding on IT with India includes special work permits extensions for Indian IT professionals, he said.

"We must pursue cooperation on IT ,'' Mr Dabbaransi said, adding that Thailand had a software park with 52 companies — 14 of them overseas companies — and wanted Indian companies to invest in Thailand.

"Since we signed an FTA with Beijing last month, Indian companies can use their investment in Thailand to seek entry into the vast market opportunities in Beijing," he said.

Thailand was also looking at bilateral trade and co-operation in the automotive and food processing sector apart from tourism Mr Dabbaransi said adding that Thailand's success in tourism has been because of its focus on `culture and nature' and suggested India's tourism industry could have similar success with such a focus.

Thailand has 600 software companies, and 20,000 software professionals and seeks to up that number to 50,000 professionals soon, said Mr Somphong Wanaphe, Secretary-General, Board of Investment, Thailand.

Thai Union Frozen Products Public Co Ltd recently entered into a $15- million relationship with Avanti Feeds Ltd - a technical collaboration to manufacture shrimp feed. Thai Union is to support Avanti on formulations, adapting technology as well as supply material, said the Thai Union President, Mr Thiraphong Chansiri.
