Cellular operators may approach SC

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Aug. 8

THE Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) is considering the possibility of appealing to the Supreme Court against the judgment delivered by the Telecom Dispute Settlement Tribunal ruling that limited mobility services are legal.

Although a final decision is yet to be taken, lawyers representing the association stated that both the majority and minority orders provide enough scope to ensure a victory in the Apex court. Especially given the fact that while the majority decision has called for a level playing field, the minority order has stated clearly that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had acted in haste. The Executive council of COAI will be meeting soon to decide on the issue.

As of now, Mr T.V. Ramachandran, Director-General, COAI, stated that: "The cellular industry and its stakeholders will study the orders in detail and after proper advice and consultation, decide on its next course of action."

The Association of Basic Telecom Operators (ABTO) has on the other hand welcomed the TDSAT ruling.
